Focus "Indian Subcontinent"
Focus Filmblock 1 | Focus Podium Discussion | Focus Lounge | Focus Filmblock 2 | Focus Filmblock 3
Every year, sehsüchte's Focus looks at a region which has not been previously at the centre of the film world's interest or can be discovered in some new and different way. In 2009, we are devoting ourselves to the "Indian Subcontinent". The region south of the Himalayas offers exciting contrasts: what dominates the western attention to the Indian Subcontinent and the biggest film industry in the world is - Bollywood. We are looking for what this region has to offer outside of the established Hindi cinema. Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are largely unknown to us as filmmaking countries, and we are looking forward to exploring their films together with our audience.

Podium Discussion - Focus "Indian Subcontinent"
Thursday, April 23, 2009 - 16.00h Thalia 3
IT’S NOT ALL BOLLYWOOD
We are directing our sehsüchte focus this year at a particular region: the Indian Subcontinent. As the biggest film producer in the world, India dominates the region south of the Himalayas and is often conflated with Bollywood cinema in the Western hemisphere. As our Focus films show, however, the Indian Subcontinent has filmically considerably more to offer. In our Focus podium discussion, experts from the film business will join new generation filmmakers in discussing what identifies film from these latitudes and where its particular qualities lie. As they do this, they will deal with the questions, among other things, as to: what directions does the style of films from the Indian Subcontinent take? What is the situation as regards training the new generation filmmakers from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka? Are there programmes supporting them in their work or are they left to their own devices?
Focus Lounge
Thursday, April 23 - 22.00h Thalia Foyer
A little bit later, it all goes on with the Focus Lounge and suitable sounds from all over the world, sidling smoothly into the evening. This is where it’s not just the filmmakers who get to know each other, to have a good time together and talk shop. All the cineastes, fans of the Indian Subcontinent and everybody who feels like a little multicultural flair, are very warmly invited. DJ for this event is Delantero del Sol this year, who’ll entice everybody onto the dance floor with his oriental and Carribean sounds.
