Explosive: Distance and Proximity in Documentaries

15.00h Thalia 2

Controversial films, you either love them or hate them. Just like the documentaries we show in the Explosive block, which look into the complex relationship between protagonist, filmmaker and audience. They show how hard it is to strike a proper balance between distance and proximity.

Workshop Discussion incl. Screening

14.00h Thalia 3

Music for film instead of film music, that’s what there is to hear and experience at our workshop discussion, including a screening. In all, sixteen montage and film students at the HFF “Konrad Wolf” are serving it all up with their communal project "a good tune oFF - Found Footage", which they are presenting live on Friday in the Thalia cinema.

Okay but, what’s this project all about? Ten montage students have put together already existing material from widely varying sources newly and, above all, creatively and have created six fascinating short films out of it. The other six film music students will accompany them at the screening in the cinema live on their instruments. What will come out of it can be described as a composition in the area between avantgarde, experiment and film music, and nobody should miss it under any circumstances. Following on from it, sehsüchte is issuing an invitation to the workshop discussion. The people involved in the project will answer questions and give insights into the way they devised and carried out this unusual idea.

Podium Discussion - "Internet - Threat to Film’s Future or Enrichment of it?"

18.00h Thalia 3

The economic crisis seems to have spared the cinema landscape so far. The threat comes from another direction: the internet as a new platform for entertainment. Why go to the cinema when all current films are already available in the net? What is the point of film festivals, if there is YouTube? What is the mobile, as a multi-function gadget, contributing to this development? Do we have to see the internet as a threat or can we see it much rather as an enrichment for the future of film? A diverse group made up of filmmakers and experts from academia will go into this and many other questions.
