Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, sehsüchte looks at student films from that period. Works by HFF directing graduate Andreas Dresen are at the centre of this year’s retrospective. In addition to presenting his first film exercises as well as his graduation and debut films, Andreas Dresen, together with former fellow students, scriptwriter Laila Stieler and cameraman Andreas Höfer, is going to talk about his time at the Hochschule and the political change that took place before and after the peaceful revolution.

Andreas Dresen

born 1963 in Gera, 1985/86 internship at the DEFA studio for feature films, assistant director; 1986-91 directing course of study at the HFF „Konrad Wolf“; from 1992 working independently as an author and director; from 1998 member of the Academy of the Arts Berlin-Brandenburg; foundation member of the German Film Academy 2003; lives in Potsdam

Andreas Dresen, Laila Stieler and Andreas Höfer talk about the time when they studied film at the HFF “Konrad Wolf” in Potsdam-Babelsberg during that exciting period. They collaborated on numerous student films as well as on Andreas Dresen’s debut film “Stilles Land”. What was it like to live and study so close to the wall? In how far did the political changes influence how they worked with film? Which traces of the time of the “Wende” can still be found today, 20 years after the peaceful revolution, in the work of the former film students?

Silent Country

The GDR in autumn 1989: Kai, a young and ambitious theatre director, ends up at a provincial theatre in the North. While the country is crumbling outside, he tries to install some fresh momentum into the tired ensemble and the dreary small town. Black eyes and misunderstandings are the result.
